KATHERINE OLIVIA SESSIONS
November 8, 1857 – March 24, 1940

March 25, 2026

Welcome to my website. This domain offers freely accessible, authoritative information about Katherine Olivia Sessions (1857-1940), a San Diego horticulturist and businesswoman known as “The Mother of Balboa Park.” Kate Sessions is not simply a distant figure of San Diego’s past. Her influence and wisdom live on and people continue to study her life and work. My own interest dates to the early 2000s. Sessions has proven to be an endlessly fascinating research subject and I have uncovered a treasury of information about her that I am now making available on this website.

In addition to annotated bibliographies of Sessions’ writing and writings about her, there is a detailed timeline of her life, an inventory of Sessions photographs housed at the San Diego History Center, and a guide to archival research sources and oral histories. There are photographs of the ways Sessions is remembered and memorialized. More content is planned, including a list of gardens designed by Sessions and much more about her productive Southern California life.

Your comments, suggestions and corrections are welcome,
